The term “consistent with” signifies that the findings align with a particular conclusion, based on the markers identified.

For a male result, the test has detected the Y chromosome, a biological marker for male sex development. How Fetal Sex is Determined

One such scenario involves a “vanishing twin,” where a male twin fetus may have been present early in the pregnancy but was later reabsorbed, leaving residual Y chromosome DNA in the mother’s bloodstream. Certain maternal health conditions or even laboratory errors, though uncommon, could also influence results.

The accuracy of fetal sex determination via ultrasound depends on several factors. These include the baby’s position in the womb (which can obscure the view of the genitalia), the gestational age at which the scan is performed, and the skill and experience of the ultrasound technician. Earlier scans or uncooperative fetal positions can make visual identification challenging, leading to less definitive results compared to NIPT.
