A dental cavity, a hole that forms in a tooth as a result of decay, begins when acids in the mouth erode the tooth’s hard outer layer, known as enamel. A cavity filling is a common restorative treatment used by dentists to repair these damaged areas. Its primary purpose is to address the decay, restore the tooth’s structure, and prevent further deterioration.

Sealing and Protecting the Tooth

A cavity filling physically seals the tooth, which is crucial for halting the decay process. After the decayed material is removed, the filling material is placed into the cleaned space, effectively closing off the opening. This creates a barrier that prevents bacteria, food particles, and acids from entering the compromised area of the tooth.
