How Eye Dilation Works
Eye dilation involves applying eye drops that act on the muscles of the iris. This action prevents the pupil from naturally getting smaller when exposed to light, ensuring it remains enlarged throughout the examination.

As the drops take effect, the black center of the eye visibly expands, allowing more light to enter and providing the eye care professional with an unobstructed view.
What to Expect During and After Dilation
Patients may experience a stinging sensation when the dilating eye drops are initially put into the eyes. Once the pupils are dilated, common temporary side effects include increased sensitivity to light (photophobia) and blurry vision, particularly for close-up tasks like reading. This occurs because the widened pupil allows more light to enter the eye than usual, and the eye’s natural ability to focus on nearby objects is temporarily impaired.
The duration of these effects can vary among individuals, lasting from 4 to 6 hours, though some people may experience them for up to 24 hours or longer. Factors influencing this duration include the type and strength of the dilating drops used, eye color (lighter eyes may remain dilated longer), and age, as children often require stronger drops that can have a more prolonged effect. To manage light sensitivity, bringing sunglasses to the appointment is recommended, and your eye care provider may offer disposable shades.
