Lichens are another notable example, representing a mutualistic relationship between a fungus and a photosynthetic organism, such as algae or cyanobacteria.

Humans utilize fungi in various ways. They are consumed as food, such as mushrooms, and are important in the production of bread and alcoholic beverages through fermentation by yeasts. Fungi are a source of important medicines, including antibiotics like penicillin and immunosuppressants. They also have industrial applications, contributing to the production of enzymes and organic acids.

Despite their many benefits, some fungi can also be pathogens, causing diseases in plants, animals, and humans. Fungal infections can lead to significant crop losses and food spoilage.
