What Do Squirrels Do for the Ecosystem?

Squirrels are common mammals found in diverse environments, from forests to urban parks. These small, agile creatures contribute significantly to the health and balance of their surroundings. Their daily activities play several important roles in maintaining ecological stability.

Nature’s Tree Planters

Squirrels promote forest regeneration and expansion through their caching behavior. They gather and bury large quantities of nuts and seeds, such as acorns and hickory nuts, for future consumption. While they retrieve many hidden stores, squirrels often forget a significant portion of their buried caches. Studies indicate squirrels may fail to recover as much as 74% of the nuts they bury.

These forgotten seeds germinate and grow into new trees. This inadvertent planting is especially important for larger seeds, like oaks and hickory nuts, which are too heavy for wind or birds to disperse. Widespread seed dispersal promotes genetic diversity within plant populations, making forests more resilient. This activity supports forest health, aids biodiversity, and contributes to the carbon cycle by growing new trees that absorb carbon dioxide.

A Vital Link in the Food Web

Squirrels are a significant prey animal in the food web. Their abundance and small size make them a regular food source for various predators. Birds of prey, such as hawks, owls, and eagles, frequently hunt squirrels.

Mammalian predators also rely on squirrels for food. Foxes, coyotes, bobcats, weasels, and some larger snakes include squirrels in their diet. Healthy squirrel populations support the survival and population dynamics of these predator species. Their availability as prey transfers energy through the ecosystem, demonstrating their role in the food chain and predator-prey balance.

Diverse Ecological Contributions

Beyond seed dispersal and being a food source, squirrels make other contributions to their ecosystems. Their constant digging for burying and retrieving food aerates the soil. This improves water penetration and oxygen availability to plant roots, benefiting plant growth and soil health.

Some squirrel species consume fungi, including underground varieties like truffles. When squirrels eat these fungi, they inadvertently disperse fungal spores through their droppings. This dispersal is important for mycorrhizal networks, which are symbiotic relationships between fungi and plant roots that enhance a plant’s ability to absorb water and nutrients.

Squirrels also contribute to habitat modification. While they generally do not create large tree holes, their gnawing can enlarge existing cavities or create small entry points in trees. These modified cavities and crevices can then be utilized by other small animals, such as birds, insects, and other mammals, for shelter, nesting, or refuge.
