What Do Deep Sea Anglerfish Eat to Survive?

The deep-sea anglerfish is a creature that captures the imagination, residing in the extreme depths of the ocean. This fascinating fish navigates a world of perpetual darkness, frigid temperatures, and immense pressure, often thousands of feet below the surface. Its unique and often bizarre appearance, including a bulbous body and a distinctive appendage, has long made it a subject of intrigue. The anglerfish can control the intensity and duration of this glow, using it to entice curious creatures closer.

Once prey is within reach, the anglerfish strikes swiftly with its disproportionately large mouth and long, inwardly-pointing, sharp teeth. These teeth are designed to ensnare and hold slippery prey, preventing escape. The anglerfish’s jaw and stomach are highly distensible, allowing it to swallow prey that can be as large as, or even twice, its own body size.

Adapting to Scarcity

Life in the deep sea presents significant challenges, particularly the extreme scarcity of food resources. Deep-sea anglerfish have developed several broad strategies to cope with this “feast or famine” existence. They are highly opportunistic predators, ensuring they capitalize on every available meal.

Their ability to consume large quantities of food when available is supported by their expandable stomachs, which can stretch significantly to accommodate prey much larger than themselves. This allows them to store energy from a substantial meal, potentially sustaining them for long periods. Deep-sea organisms generally exhibit lower metabolic demands compared to their shallow-water counterparts, an adaptation that helps conserve energy in a low-resource environment.
