Bottlenose dolphins employ sophisticated strategies to catch prey. Echolocation is a primary tool, emitting high-frequency sounds that bounce off objects, helping them determine prey size, shape, distance, and internal structure. Cooperative hunting is a common tactic, where groups of dolphins work together to herd schools of fish into a tight “bait ball.” They take turns charging through the compressed school to feed, while others maintain the formation. Techniques include “pinwheeling,” where dolphins encircle fish by splashing their tails, and “drivers and blockers,” where some herd fish towards others forming a barrier.
