The ovaries are a pair of small, almond-shaped organs that play a central role in the female reproductive system and overall female health. These glands are responsible for producing and releasing eggs, as well as synthesizing hormones that regulate various bodily functions. Anatomy and Location

The ovaries are oval-shaped glands, each measuring approximately 3 to 5 centimeters in length during a woman’s childbearing years. Following ovulation, the remaining follicle transforms into a temporary structure called the corpus luteum, which then produces hormones to prepare the uterus for potential pregnancy.

Ovarian Hormones and Their Wider Impact

Beyond gamete production, the ovaries are endocrine glands that produce female sex hormones, primarily estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen plays a role in developing female secondary sexual characteristics, such as breast development and widening of the hips. It also helps regulate the menstrual cycle by thickening the uterine lining in preparation for pregnancy.

Estrogen’s influence extends to various other body systems, impacting bone density, cardiovascular health, and brain function. It contributes to maintaining strong bones by preventing calcium loss and helps regulate cholesterol levels.

Progesterone, the other major ovarian hormone, works alongside estrogen to prepare the uterus for pregnancy and maintain it if conception occurs. It also affects the nervous system and plays a role in bone strength and skin elasticity.

Ovaries Across the Lifespan

Ovarian function undergoes changes throughout a female’s life, reflecting different stages of development and aging. Before birth, the ovaries contain millions of immature egg cells, which largely remain dormant throughout childhood. The number of these potential eggs decreases by the onset of puberty.

Puberty marks the activation of ovarian function, initiated by hormonal signals from the brain. This leads to the commencement of regular menstrual cycles, characterized by monthly egg release and hormone production. During the reproductive years, many eggs will be released through ovulation. As a woman approaches menopause, the ovaries gradually reduce their production of estrogen and progesterone and eventually cease releasing eggs. This decline in ovarian activity marks the end of menstruation and reproductive capacity, leading to hormonal shifts that can affect various bodily systems.
