Natural rubber, primarily sourced from the milky sap (latex) of the Hevea brasiliensis tree, is valued for its unique elasticity and strength. Its historical use dates back to ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, and its widespread application in modern times, especially after vulcanization in the 1840s, highlights its properties. However, natural rubber presents several limitations that impact its performance, durability, and sustainability.

Vulnerability to Environmental Factors

Natural rubber is susceptible to degradation from environmental elements. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight causes photochemical degradation, leading to cracking and embrittlement due to vulnerable carbon-carbon double bonds in its molecular structure. Ozone, a highly reactive form of oxygen, also poses a significant threat, reacting with these double bonds to cause surface cracks and reduce the material’s lifespan. Natural rubber is sensitive to heat, which accelerates its aging process and alters mechanical properties, such as a reduction in elasticity or a tendency to harden or soften. Atmospheric oxygen contributes to this degradation through oxidation, intensified at higher temperatures.

Limitations in Performance and Chemical Resistance

Natural rubber has inherent weaknesses when exposed to certain substances or mechanical stresses. It exhibits poor resistance to oils, greases, and many organic solvents like gasoline or benzene. Exposure to these can cause swelling, softening, and loss of mechanical strength.

While resilient, its abrasion resistance is lower than some synthetic rubber alternatives in demanding applications. The material also experiences creep and stress relaxation, meaning it can deform permanently under prolonged stress, compromising long-term performance. Natural rubber has a limited temperature range, becoming brittle below -55°C (-67°F) and softening above 82°C (180°F).

Health and Broader Environmental Impact

Natural rubber production and use involve health and environmental concerns. Latex allergy, a reaction to proteins in natural rubber latex, is a significant health issue. Reactions range from mild skin irritation, like redness or hives, to more severe symptoms such as runny nose, asthma, or, rarely, life-threatening anaphylaxis.

Environmentally, expanding natural rubber cultivation contributes to deforestation in biodiverse regions, leading to biodiversity loss and disrupted ecological networks. Monoculture practices deplete soil nutrients and increase the need for fertilizers and pesticides, potentially causing soil and water contamination. Rubber processing can also result in air and water pollution from factory emissions.

Supply Chain and Cost Volatility

Natural rubber faces economic and logistical challenges due to its supply chain. Production is highly concentrated in a few Southeast Asian countries, making the global supply vulnerable to regional issues like political instability, natural disasters, or tree diseases. For instance, the Pestalotiopsis fungal disease has reduced latex production by 20% to 50% in affected areas.

As a commodity, natural rubber is subject to notable price fluctuations driven by global supply and demand, weather patterns, and speculative trading. This price volatility can create significant challenges for manufacturers in managing costs and ensuring stable production. Furthermore, concerns persist regarding labor practices in some rubber-producing regions, including issues such as low wages, discrimination, and inadequate safety standards, adding another layer of complexity to the supply chain.
