Somatostatin
Somatostatin, also known as Growth Hormone-Inhibiting Hormone (GHIH), is produced in various tissues, including the hypothalamus. Its primary function in the hypothalamus is to inhibit the release of Growth Hormone (GH) from the anterior pituitary gland, thereby influencing growth and metabolic processes. Somatostatin also inhibits the release of Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) from the pituitary.
Dopamine
Dopamine, often referred to as Prolactin-Inhibiting Hormone (PIH), is another hypothalamic inhibiting hormone. Dopamine’s main role is to inhibit the release of Prolactin (PRL) from the anterior pituitary. This inhibition is important for preventing milk production outside of pregnancy and lactation. Dopamine achieves this by binding to specific receptors on pituitary cells, suppressing prolactin secretion.
