The bipinnately compound leaves are 12 to 30 inches long, with oval leaflets 1 to 3 inches in length, possessing a shiny surface and smooth edges. Following the flowering period, the tree produces distinctive flat, dark brown, shiny seed pods, typically 1 to 2 inches long, which usually contain a single flattened, round seed.

Ecological Significance

The water locust tree and its flowers contribute to wetland ecosystems. As a member of the Fabaceae (pea family), Gleditsia aquatica forms a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria. These bacteria create root nodules, fixing atmospheric nitrogen into a usable form for the plant, which can then benefit other nearby plants.

The tree’s extensive root system is particularly useful for erosion control, especially on the wet banks of freshwater systems. The inconspicuous flowers attract insects, contributing to local pollinator populations. The seed pods provide a food source for local wildlife.
