Seahorses present a unique case of male pregnancy, where the female deposits eggs into a specialized brood pouch on the male, who then fertilizes and carries them until hatching.

Fish mating systems vary significantly, from monogamy to various forms of polygamy and promiscuity. Monogamous pairs, like some cichlid species, form strong bonds and often cooperate in parental care. Polygyny, where one male mates with multiple females, is common, often seen in species where males defend territories or resources. Polyandry, where one female mates with multiple males, is less common but occurs in some species where females produce multiple clutches cared for by different males. Parental involvement in ensuring the survival of eggs and offspring varies dramatically among fish species. Many fish exhibit no parental care, simply releasing eggs and sperm and leaving offspring to develop independently. Species like cod and tuna are examples of broadcast spawners that release vast numbers of eggs, relying on sheer quantity for some offspring to survive.

Other fish species invest significantly in parental care, which can take many forms. Nest guarding is common, with one or both parents protecting eggs from predators. Male sticklebacks, after attracting a female to their nest, diligently guard the eggs until they hatch. Mouthbrooding, a specialized form of parental care, is observed in many cichlid species, where one parent carries the eggs and newly hatched fry in their mouth for protection.

The extent of parental care is often linked to the number and size of eggs produced; species with fewer, larger eggs tend to provide more intensive care.
