Identifying Spinner Dolphins
Spinner dolphins are relatively small, slender cetaceans, typically measuring between 4.5 to 8 feet in length and weighing 50 to 175 pounds. Their physical appearance often features a tripartite color pattern, with a dark gray dorsal cape, a lighter gray along their sides, and a white or pale gray belly. They possess a notably long, thin beak, which is reflected in their scientific name, Stenella longirostris, meaning “long beak.” Their dorsal fins can vary in shape, from slightly curved to erect and triangular, and their flippers are slender and recurved.
These dolphins inhabit tropical and warm-temperate waters across the globe, found in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. While they are generally found in offshore pelagic waters, certain populations, such as those in Hawaii, utilize nearshore, sheltered bays and lagoons as resting areas during the day.
The name “spinner dolphin” comes from their remarkable ability to leap from the water and spin multiple times along their longitudinal axis before re-entering the water. This acrobatic behavior can involve up to seven rotations in a single jump. While the exact reasons for this spinning are not fully understood, several theories exist.
Spinning may serve as a form of communication or acoustic signaling within their groups. Another theory suggests it helps remove ectoparasites, such as remoras, from their skin. Some scientists also propose that spinning could be a form of play, social bonding, hunting, or thermoregulation.
Daily Lives and Social Structures
Spinner dolphins primarily forage at night, when their prey, consisting of small mesopelagic fish, shrimp, and squid, migrate closer to the surface from deeper waters. They often dive to depths of 650 to 1,000 feet to feed on these organisms. During hunting, dolphins may work cooperatively, using vocalizations and movements to herd prey into concentrated balls, making it easier for them to consume. This nocturnal feeding strategy is effective when food resources are more accessible.
Communication among spinner dolphins involves a diverse array of sounds, including echolocation clicks, whistles, and burst-pulse sounds. Echolocation is important for navigation and locating prey in the dark depths of the ocean. Whistles and other vocalizations are used for social interactions, coordination within the group, and potentially as a visual signal during their aerial displays. They also engage in surface behaviors, such as tail slapping, which can communicate the presence of food, danger, or signals for the group to move.
Spinner dolphins are highly social animals that live in fluid pods, varying in size from dozens to thousands of individuals. During daylight hours, especially in coastal areas, they seek sheltered, shallow waters to rest and socialize. This resting period involves synchronous diving in tight formations, with reduced acoustic and aerial activity, providing protection from predators like sharks. As dusk approaches, their activity levels increase, with more leaping and vocalizing, signaling their preparation to return to offshore waters for nocturnal foraging.
Conservation and Responsible Viewing
Spinner dolphins face several threats that impact their populations, despite being classified as “Least Concern” by the IUCN. Historically, bycatch in tuna fisheries, particularly in the Eastern Tropical Pacific, has been a major threat. Tuna often swim beneath schools of dolphins, leading fishermen to set large purse seine nets around dolphin pods, inadvertently trapping and killing many dolphins alongside the tuna. Although “dolphin-safe” fishing methods have been implemented to reduce these mortalities, bycatch remains a concern.
Other threats include habitat degradation, which can stem from coastal development and pollution affecting their resting and foraging grounds. Noise pollution from human activities, such as shipping and seismic surveys, can disrupt their communication and echolocation, impacting their ability to navigate, hunt, and socialize. Irresponsible tourism also poses a risk, as excessive or unregulated dolphin watching can disturb their resting periods.
To protect spinner dolphins, responsible viewing practices are important. Guidelines for marine wildlife observation emphasize minimizing disturbance to these animals.
