Short-finned pilot whales have a stocky build. Males typically measure 4 to 6 meters (13 to 20 feet) and females 3 to 5 meters (9.8 to 16.4 feet) in length. Their coloration is generally black to dark gray or brown, sometimes with lighter gray to white patches like an anchor-shaped marking on their underside or a saddle patch behind the dorsal fin. They have a bulbous forehead, lacking an obvious rostrum, and a broad, sickle-shaped dorsal fin positioned far forward on their body. Their flippers are shorter and more curved than their long-finned relatives, and they possess fewer teeth.
These whales inhabit warm temperate to tropical oceanic waters globally, avoiding areas north of 50°N or south of 40°S. They prefer deeper waters near continental shelf breaks and slopes where prey is abundant. Some populations, like those in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, extend into open ocean environments. Their distribution spans the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, with resident populations in locations like Hawaii and California.
Complex Social Lives
Short-finned pilot whales are social animals, forming stable family units known as pods. These pods are matrilineal, led by an elder female, similar to killer whale social structures. Pods commonly consist of 10 to 30 individuals, though groups of several hundred have been observed. Females often remain in their birth pods, while males may move between groups.
Communication within these pods involves a wide range of vocalizations for social interaction. They also use echolocation for navigation and locating prey in the dark ocean depths. They engage in cooperative behaviors, including alloparenting, where individuals care for young that are not their own. This social cohesion can sometimes lead to mass strandings, where entire pods beach themselves. Hunting Habits
The diet of short-finned pilot whales primarily consists of squid, fish, and octopus. They are known for their deep-diving capabilities, making high-speed dives to pursue prey. These whales can descend to depths of around 700 meters (2,300 feet), with a maximum recorded dive depth of 1,018 meters (3,340 feet).
Echolocation abilities are important for hunting in the dark, deep ocean. They emit high-frequency sounds that bounce off objects, creating a detailed acoustic map to locate prey. These predators often follow the vertical migration of their prey, making deep dives at dusk and dawn and foraging closer to the surface at night.
