Conflicts over land ownership can arise, especially where communities lack formal legal documents certifying their land rights.

Labor practices within the industry also raise concerns. While plantations can provide employment in remote rural areas where alternative jobs are scarce, contributing to rural development and poverty alleviation for some, benefits are not always evenly distributed. Reports indicate issues such as low wages, with some workers earning less than the provincial minimum wage, and instances of uncompensated overtime. Working conditions can be challenging, and access to adequate healthcare and clean water for workers’ housing is substandard.

Companies often prioritize outside workers, leading to limited job absorption for local residents, especially those with less education. Some communities entering into partnerships with companies may not fully comprehend profit-sharing agreements, leading to dependency on the company.

Pathways to Sustainable Palm Oil

Efforts to mitigate the negative impacts of oil palm cultivation center on sustainable palm oil. This approach aims to balance economic viability with environmental and social responsibility. A significant part of this effort involves certification schemes, such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).

The RSPO is a non-profit, multi-stakeholder initiative that has developed global standards for responsible palm oil production. Companies seeking RSPO certification must adhere to environmental and social criteria, including prohibiting deforestation, protecting endangered species and their habitats, and ensuring responsible land use. This certification process involves strict verification of production practices through systematic annual audits.

Responsible cultivation practices reduce deforestation and environmental harm, including avoiding plantations on peatlands and other sensitive areas. Consumers and companies play a role in driving this change by demanding and sourcing certified sustainable palm oil. By choosing products with RSPO certification, consumers can support practices that reduce the industry’s environmental footprint and promote better social outcomes.
