Medical professionals often refine this dating with an early ultrasound, particularly in the first trimester between 7 and 13 weeks, as it provides a more accurate estimate of gestational age by measuring the fetus. Ultrasounds performed later in pregnancy become progressively less accurate for dating purposes.

First Steps After Confirmation

After a positive pregnancy test, schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider. This initial prenatal visit typically occurs between 6 and 12 weeks of pregnancy. Early and regular prenatal care allows for the assessment of overall health, identification of potential risks, and monitoring of fetal development.

Certain medications, changes in birth control, and perimenopause can also alter menstrual patterns.
