Distilled water undergoes a specific purification process to remove impurities, including minerals, salts, and organic matter. Distillation involves heating water to its boiling point to create steam. As the water vapor rises, it leaves behind most dissolved substances and contaminants.
The steam is then collected and cooled, condensing back into a liquid. This process results in highly purified water with a very low concentration of total dissolved solids, often less than 1 part per million (PPM). Distilled water is characterized by its lack of minerals, near-neutral pH, and poor electrical conductivity due to the absence of dissolved ions.
Key Differences Between Well Water and Distilled Water
The fundamental distinction between well water and distilled water lies in their purity and how they acquire their characteristics. Well water is a natural product of the Earth’s water cycle, while distilled water is a manufactured product of an intensive purification process. This leads to several key differences.
Well water naturally contains various dissolved minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, which contribute to its taste and “hardness.” In contrast, distilled water is virtually devoid of these minerals, as they are left behind during the boiling and condensation process. The production methods are entirely different: well water is accessed directly from underground aquifers, relying on natural filtration. Distilled water is created through an engineered process of boiling and re-condensing, specifically designed to strip away impurities.
