A molecule is considered polar if it contains these polar bonds and its overall geometric shape prevents the individual bond dipoles from canceling each other out. The Polarity of Vinegar’s Components

The oxygen atoms in both the C=O and O-H bonds are highly electronegative, pulling electron density towards themselves and creating significant partial negative charges. These polar bonds, combined with the molecule’s asymmetrical structure, result in an overall uneven distribution of charge, making acetic acid a polar compound. Mineral deposits are often ionic compounds, which are readily attracted to and dissolved by polar solvents like water and acetic acid. Nonpolar substances like grease and oils, however, are not easily dissolved by vinegar, which is why specialized degreasers (nonpolar solvents) are often needed for those types of messes.
