Phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral in the human body, with approximately 85% of it found in bones and teeth. It combines with calcium to form calcium phosphate, providing hardness and rigidity for skeletal structures and dental enamel. Beyond this structural contribution, phosphorus is fundamental to the body’s energy system. It is a key component of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the body’s energy currency, which powers nearly every cellular process, including muscle contraction and nerve signaling.

This mineral also forms an integral part of genetic material, as a structural component of both deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA). The phosphate groups in DNA and RNA link nucleotide units, forming the backbone of these molecules for genetic information storage and protein synthesis. Furthermore, phosphorus is a primary component of phospholipids, the main structural elements of all cell membranes. These phospholipids form a bilayer that separates the cell’s internal environment from its surroundings, regulating the passage of substances.

Phosphorus also contributes to maintaining the body’s acid-base balance, acting as a buffer system in the blood and other fluids. This buffering capacity helps to neutralize excess acids or bases, ensuring that the body’s pH remains within a narrow, healthy range. Additionally, phosphorus is involved in activating enzymes, which are proteins that facilitate numerous biochemical reactions. It also plays a role in nerve and muscle function.

How We Get Phosphorus

Phosphorus is widely available in many foods, making dietary deficiency uncommon for most healthy individuals. Rich sources include protein-rich foods such as dairy products, red meat, poultry, and fish. Plant-based sources also provide phosphorus, including legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.

The body absorbs phosphorus more efficiently from animal-based foods than plant-based sources. This is because plant foods contain phytates, a storage form of phosphorus that the human body cannot easily break down. Processed foods may also contain added inorganic phosphorus, which is almost completely absorbed. For adults, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for phosphorus is around 700 milligrams per day.
