It also possesses excellent shock and wear resistance, a valuable attribute for its historical uses.

Persimmon wood’s distinctive coloration features wide, creamy white to pale yellowish-brown sapwood that darkens with age. The heartwood, a small central core in older trees, is dark brown to black, sometimes with streaks, resembling ebony. Historically, the lighter sapwood was often more prized and utilized.

Due to its density, shock resistance, and fine grain, persimmon wood has been used for demanding applications requiring durability and a smooth finish. Historically, it was a preferred material for golf club heads, particularly drivers, until the widespread adoption of metal woods. Its ability to retain a smooth surface even after prolonged use also made it ideal for textile shuttles, billiard cues, and shoe lasts. Other uses include tool handles, turnery, veneer, and musical instrument components, showcasing its versatility.
