This process creates a porous, sponge-like texture, which is a defining characteristic of most lava rocks. While its porous nature makes lava rock seem light, other factors influence its actual weight. The solid material of lava rock, primarily basalt, is inherently dense. However, the air pockets within the rock reduce its bulk density, which is the weight of the rock including its pores. Water absorption also plays a substantial role in lava rock’s weight. Due to its extensive network of interconnected pores, lava rock can absorb a considerable amount of water. When saturated, the rock becomes much heavier as water fills the spaces previously occupied by air. Different types of volcanic rocks, such as scoria and pumice, also exhibit varying degrees of porosity and therefore different weights, with pumice being so porous it can float.
