Dolphins are marine mammals known for their intelligence and social behaviors. These agile predators are indeed carnivores, meaning their diet consists exclusively of other animals. Understanding Carnivores
A carnivore is an animal that obtains its nutrition and energy primarily from eating other animals. The term “carnivore” originates from Latin, literally translating to “meat eater.” This classification differs from herbivores, which consume plants, and omnivores, which eat both plants and animals.
Carnivores often possess specific adaptations for hunting and consuming prey, such as sharp teeth, strong jaws, and a digestive system suited for processing meat. The Dolphin’s Primary Diet

Some dolphin species also consume crustaceans, including shrimp and crab. River dolphins, found in freshwater environments, have a diet that includes small river fish and crustaceans. Dolphins are opportunistic feeders, consuming whatever suitable prey is readily available.
Advanced Hunting Strategies
Dolphins employ sophisticated hunting techniques to secure their diet. One primary method is echolocation, also known as biosonar, which allows them to “see” with sound underwater. Dolphins produce high-frequency clicks that travel through the water, and by interpreting the echoes that bounce back from objects, they can determine the size, shape, distance, and even internal structure of their prey. This ability is particularly useful for locating food in murky or dark waters.
Dolphins also engage in cooperative hunting behaviors, often working in groups to capture prey. One common strategy involves herding fish into a tight “bait ball” or against a barrier like a shoreline, where individual dolphins then take turns swimming through the concentrated prey to feed. A unique cooperative technique is “mud-ringing” or “silt netting,” where dolphins use their tails to stir up mud in a circular pattern, creating a temporary net that traps fish. The fish, disoriented or attempting to escape the mud cloud, may leap into the air, making them easy targets for waiting dolphins.
