Vitaros cream is a prescription medication designed for men experiencing erectile dysfunction (ED). This topical treatment contains alprostadil as its active ingredient, which works by increasing blood flow directly to the penis. Unlike oral medications, Vitaros is applied locally, targeting improved blood circulation in penile tissues to achieve and maintain an erection.
Step-by-Step Application Guide
Before applying Vitaros cream, it is helpful to urinate, as this can make the application process more comfortable. Begin by thoroughly washing your hands for cleanliness. Each dose of Vitaros comes in a single-use AccuDose applicator, individually sealed.
Carefully remove the AccuDose applicator, then gently twist off the cap. Hold the penis upright with one hand, ensuring the glans (head) is fully exposed. Position the tip of the AccuDose applicator directly over the meatus, which is the small opening at the tip of the penis where urine exits.
With the applicator correctly positioned, slowly depress the plunger to dispense all of the cream into the meatus. A small amount of cream may spill onto the glans; this is normal and not a concern. After dispensing the dose, remove and dispose of the applicator immediately.
What to Expect After Application
After application, hold the penis upright for about 30 seconds to allow effective absorption into the penile tissues. The active ingredient, alprostadil, begins to work by relaxing the smooth muscles in the penile arteries, increasing blood flow.
An erection typically develops within 5 to 30 minutes after applying Vitaros cream. However, sexual stimulation is still necessary for the desired effect. The erection usually lasts for about 1 to 2 hours, providing a sufficient timeframe for sexual activity. Individual responses can vary.
Safety, Storage, and Disposal
After applying Vitaros cream, common side effects include pain, burning, tingling, or redness in the penis. Penile swelling or inflammation of the glans (balanitis) has also been reported. If a condom is not used, a female partner might experience mild vaginal burning or itching.
Seek immediate medical attention if an erection lasts over four hours (priapism), to prevent potential damage to the penis. Do not use Vitaros cream more than once within 24 hours, or more than two to three times per week, to minimize the risk of increased side effects like irritation.
Vitaros cream must be stored in a refrigerator at temperatures between 2°C and 8°C. For short-term travel, an unopened package can be kept at temperatures below 25°C for up to three days. Each AccuDose applicator is for single use and should be discarded immediately after application.
