How to Safely Insert Hemorrhoid Cream

Hemorrhoid cream is a widely available over-the-counter solution designed to provide temporary relief from the uncomfortable symptoms associated with hemorrhoids, such as itching, burning, and general discomfort. The creams work by temporarily shrinking swollen tissue, providing a protective barrier, or numbing the affected area. Many people experience hemorrhoids, making these creams a common and accessible option.

Applying Hemorrhoid Cream Externally

Applying hemorrhoid cream to external hemorrhoids involves a few steps. First, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water. Gently cleanse the affected anal area with mild soap and water, then pat it dry with a soft cloth or tissue.

Once the area is clean and dry, squeeze a pea-sized amount of cream onto your fingertip. Gently apply this cream to the external hemorrhoids and the surrounding skin. Avoid vigorous rubbing, as this can cause further irritation. After application, wash your hands again with soap and warm water.

Applying Hemorrhoid Cream Internally

For internal hemorrhoids, an applicator is often included. Wash your hands thoroughly and ensure the anal area is clean and dry, ideally after a bowel movement. Attach the provided round-tip applicator securely to the cream tube.

Lubricate the applicator tip with a small amount of cream or petroleum jelly. Gently insert the applicator into the rectum, typically 1 to 2 inches, to avoid pain or damage. Once inserted, gently squeeze the tube to dispense the cream. Slowly remove the applicator. If reusable, clean it thoroughly with soap and warm water after each use before replacing its cover. Wash your hands again after application.

Safe Application Practices

Hemorrhoid creams are typically applied up to three or four times daily, such as in the morning, at bedtime, and after each bowel movement. Use these creams for short-term relief, generally no more than seven consecutive days. Prolonged use, especially of creams with hydrocortisone, can lead to skin thinning or irritation; consult a healthcare provider for extended use.

Maintain good hygiene, including thorough hand washing before and after each application, to minimize infection risk. If symptoms do not improve within seven days, worsen, or if you experience bleeding, severe pain, or unusual changes, seek medical attention. These symptoms may indicate a more serious condition. Store hemorrhoid cream at room temperature, out of reach of children and pets.
