Preparing for Application
Before applying eye ointment, prepare properly for hygiene and effectiveness. Begin by thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. This step significantly reduces the risk of introducing bacteria or other contaminants to the eye. Clean hands prevent potential eye infections.
Next, gently clean the area around your eye. If there is any discharge or crusting, carefully wipe it away using a clean, damp cloth or cotton ball, moving from the inner corner of the eye outwards. This ensures the ointment makes proper contact and prevents debris from being trapped. Finally, inspect the eye ointment tube itself, confirming it is not expired, damaged, or contaminated.
Step-by-Step Application
To apply the eye ointment, begin by tilting your head slightly backward while looking upwards. This position makes the lower eyelid more accessible and provides a clear view. Gently use a clean finger to pull down your lower eyelid, creating a small pouch between the eyelid and the eyeball. This pouch serves as the target area for the ointment.
Hold the ointment tube in your other hand, positioning its tip above the created pouch. Ensure the tip does not touch your eye, eyelashes, or any other surface to avoid contamination. While maintaining the pouch, gently squeeze the tube to dispense a thin strip of ointment, typically about one-quarter to one-half inch long, directly into the pouch. The exact length may vary based on your doctor’s instructions.
After applying the ointment, slowly release your lower eyelid. You may blink gently a few times to help distribute the medication evenly across the eye. Avoid squeezing your eye shut tightly, as this can force the ointment out. Allow the ointment to spread naturally and coat the eye.
After Application
Immediately after applying the ointment, gently close your eye for one to two minutes. This allows the medication to melt and spread across the entire surface of the eye for optimal coverage and absorption.
Temporary blurry vision is common after applying eye ointment due to its thick consistency. This typically lasts a few minutes as the ointment disperses. Avoid activities requiring clear vision, such as driving or operating machinery, immediately after application. Finally, rewash your hands with soap and water to remove residual ointment and maintain cleanliness.
