Identifying root rot in plumerias involves observing both above-ground and below-ground indicators. Above-ground symptoms often include yellowing leaves, wilting or drooping foliage even in moist soil, stunted growth, and a lack of flowering. Discoloration may also appear on the stem near the soil line, or branch tips might turn black.
A definitive diagnosis requires inspecting the roots. Healthy plumeria roots are firm and white or tan. In contrast, roots affected by rot will appear soft, mushy, and discolored, often brown or black. A foul or musty odor from the soil or roots also indicates decay. Gently remove the plant from its pot and rinse the root ball for a clear examination.
Causes of Plumeria Root Rot
Plumeria root rot primarily stems from excessive moisture around the root system. Overwatering is a common factor, as consistently wet soil deprives roots of oxygen. This lack of oxygen allows harmful fungal and bacterial pathogens to thrive, attacking and decaying root tissue, which prevents the plant from absorbing water and nutrients.
Poor drainage also significantly contributes to root rot. This can result from heavy, dense soil mixes that retain too much moisture, or pots lacking sufficient drainage holes. Improper pot size, especially pots too large for the plant, can also hold excess moisture, worsening the problem.
Preventing Plumeria Root Rot
Preventing root rot involves managing soil moisture and providing a suitable growing environment. Proper watering techniques are paramount. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings; check by feeling the top inch or two, watering only when it feels dry. Choosing an appropriate pot size that is not excessively large for the plant helps prevent the soil from remaining wet for extended periods. Good air circulation around the plant and avoiding excessively humid conditions can further deter fungal growth.
Treating Plumeria Root Rot

You may need to rinse the roots under running water to get a clear view of their condition.
