Understanding the Lentejas Plant

The lentil plant (Lens culinaris) is an annual legume in the Fabaceae family, like peas and beans. Originating in the Near East and Mediterranean, lentils have been cultivated for thousands of years as a global food source. These slender, semi-erect plants typically grow 12 to 30 inches tall.

Lentil plants have pinnate leaves with small, oval to lance-shaped leaflets and tendrils. Their small, pea-like flowers, usually white, pale purple, or bluish, develop into flat pods containing one or two lens-shaped seeds. Common types include brown, green (Puy), red, and black (Beluga), each offering distinct flavors. Seed sizes vary from small (up to 0.25 inches) to large (up to 0.5 inches).

Growing Lentejas

Lentil cultivation begins with proper site selection and soil preparation. Lentil plants thrive in full sunlight, requiring at least six to eight hours daily. The location should also offer good air circulation to help prevent disease. Lentils prefer loose, well-draining soil, ideally a sandy loam, though they can adapt to various soil types if waterlogging is avoided.

The ideal soil pH for lentils ranges from 6.0 to 7.5, though they can tolerate 4.4 to 8.2. Before planting, incorporate aged compost to enrich the soil and ensure good drainage. Keeping the planting area free of weeds is important, as lentils do not compete well and their root systems are easily disturbed.

Lentils are susceptible to pests and diseases. Common insect pests include aphids, which feed on plant sap, and cutworms that damage young plants. Diseases such as rust, Ascochyta blight, and Fusarium wilt can also affect lentil plants, causing lesions, wilting, or reduced growth. Good cultural practices, like proper spacing and crop rotation, help prevent these issues. Taller varieties may benefit from a low trellis or support to prevent lodging.

Harvesting Lentejas

Lentils typically take 80 to 110 days to mature from planting to harvest, depending on variety and growing conditions. Harvest dried lentils when lower pods begin to turn brown and plants start to yellow and dry. Since pods mature from the bottom up, the entire plant may not ripen simultaneously.

Cut the entire plant at the base when about 80% of the pods are dry. Dry harvested plants further by hanging them in a dry, well-ventilated area or spreading them on a tarp.
