Lavender, often searched as “lafanda,” is a cherished perennial plant known for its captivating fragrance and beautiful blooms. It’s a popular choice for gardens and landscapes worldwide, valued for centuries for its aromatic qualities.
Planting Lavender for Success
Lavender thrives in specific conditions, making careful site selection crucial. It needs full sun exposure, requiring at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily to flourish. Adequate sunlight promotes vigorous growth and abundant flowering.
Well-draining soil is equally important for lavender’s health, as it is susceptible to root rot in waterlogged conditions. Sandy or gravelly soil is ideal. Gardeners can improve drainage in heavier clay soils by incorporating materials like grit or sand, or by using raised beds. Lavender prefers a neutral to slightly alkaline soil pH, ranging between 6.7 and 7.3.
When planting, dig a hole that is larger than the root ball of the lavender plant. Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. For optimal air circulation and growth, space individual lavender plants about 12 to 18 inches apart, or up to 3 feet apart depending on the variety. After planting, regular watering is beneficial during the first growing season to help the plant establish its root system.
Essential Lavender Care
Once established, lavender exhibits remarkable drought tolerance, requiring minimal watering. Overwatering can be detrimental, leading to root rot. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, especially for mature plants.
Pruning is an important aspect of lavender care, promoting bushiness, encouraging more blooms, and preventing the plant from becoming woody and leggy. An initial pruning can be done in early spring, removing any winter-damaged stems and shaping the plant before new buds appear. The most significant pruning occurs after the first flush of flowers has faded in late summer or early autumn.
When pruning, remove spent flower stalks and about an inch of leaf growth. It is best to avoid cutting back into old, woody stems, as new growth may not emerge. For hardy lavenders, cutting back to about 9 inches above new shoots is also an option. Pruning no more than one-third of the branch’s length annually helps maintain plant vigor.
Lavender thrives in nutrient-poor soils and does not require much fertilization. Too much fertilizer, particularly those high in nitrogen, can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowering. If soil is extremely infertile or for container-grown plants, consider a light application of a slow-release, balanced organic fertilizer in early spring.
Lavender is resistant to pests and diseases, largely due to its aromatic oils. The most common issue is root rot, primarily caused by overwatering and poor drainage. Ensuring proper soil conditions and avoiding excessive moisture are the best preventative measures against this fungal problem.

French Lavender (Lavandula stoechas or Lavandula dentata) features unique tufted flowers, often described as “rabbit ears.” Its fragrance is more camphorous or piney than English lavender. French lavender is used for ornamental purposes in gardens, especially in warmer climates, and in essential oils and some culinary applications.
Spanish Lavender (Lavandula stoechas) is characterized by its distinctive pineapple-shaped flower heads topped with prominent bracts. It has a strong, often piney or camphoraceous fragrance.
