Cleaning a nit comb after each use is important to maintain hygiene and prevent the spread of lice or re-infestation. Proper cleaning ensures the comb remains effective, removing any remaining pests and their eggs. This makes the comb a reliable tool for managing head lice.
Preparing for Cleaning
Before cleaning, gather all necessary supplies. You will need paper towels, an old toothbrush or a specialized comb cleaning tool, dish soap, a bowl or container, and hot water. A preliminary rinse of the comb under running water can dislodge loose lice and nits, making subsequent cleaning easier. This initial rinse prevents larger particles from interfering with thorough cleaning.
Physical Removal of Debris
After the initial rinse, remove any remaining lice and nits from between the comb’s teeth. These pests and their eggs can become tightly lodged. Use an old toothbrush to gently scrub along the comb’s teeth, dislodging stubborn debris. Alternatively, thread dental floss or a needle through each space to push out trapped material. Wipe the comb on a paper towel after each pass to collect removed nits and lice. Repeat until the comb is free of visible particles.
Sanitizing the Comb
Physical cleaning removes visible debris, but sanitizing the comb targets microscopic organisms. Soak the comb in hot water, above 130°F (54°C), for 10 to 15 minutes; this temperature kills lice and eggs. Submerge the comb in 70% or higher rubbing alcohol for at least 10 minutes. For robust sanitation, use a diluted bleach solution (1:10 household bleach to water). Submerge the comb for 10 to 15 minutes, ensuring ventilation. After any chemical solution, thoroughly rinse the comb with clean water to remove all residue. This prevents skin irritation or damage to the comb from chemical remnants.
Storing Your Clean Comb
Once the comb has been cleaned and sanitized, proper drying prevents rust and inhibits bacterial growth. Air-dry the comb completely on a clean surface or with a clean towel. After it is fully dry, store the nit comb in a clean, dry, sealed container or a re-sealable bag. This storage maintains the comb’s hygienic condition and shields it from dust or other contaminants. This ensures the comb remains ready and effective for its next use.
