These plants, also known as wax plants, are largely epiphytic in their natural habitats, drawing nutrients and moisture from the air and decaying organic matter. Providing appropriate nutrition is important for vigorous growth and distinctive blooms.

Fertilizing Hoya plants provides nutrients for robust growth and healthy foliage. Supplemental feeding helps these plants develop strong stems and vibrant leaves, which are key to their appeal. Proper fertilization also encourages characteristic flowers. Over time, plants grown in containers deplete the available nutrients in their potting mix, requiring external nutrient replenishment for health and vigor.

Selecting Hoya Fertilizer

The NPK ratio on fertilizer labels indicates the percentages of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), primary macronutrients plants require. For general Hoya health and foliage growth, a balanced NPK ratio, such as 10-10-10 or 20-20-20, is recommended. To encourage blooming, a fertilizer with a slightly higher phosphorus content, like a 5-10-3 or 7-9-5 ratio, supports more flowers.

Fertilizing Schedule and Application

Hoya plants benefit most from fertilization during their active growing season, which spans from spring through summer. During these months, plants produce new growth and bloom, requiring more nutrients to support these processes. As fall and winter approach, Hoyas enter a period of slower growth or semi-dormancy, and fertilization should be reduced or stopped. Fertilizing during dormancy stresses the plant and leads to issues like root rot or salt buildup.

Dilute the fertilizer to half or even quarter strength of the recommended dosage to prevent over-fertilization and root burn. Symptoms include browning or crisping of leaf tips and edges, stunted growth, or a white, crusty residue on the soil surface. To address this, flush the soil with plain water to wash away excess salts, and stop fertilization temporarily.

Conversely, under-fertilization hinders a Hoya’s health. Signs of insufficient nutrients include slow or stunted growth, pale or yellowing leaves, and a lack of blooming. Yellowing leaves, especially entirely yellow ones, indicate a nitrogen deficiency, as nitrogen promotes deep green coloration. If these symptoms appear, adjusting the fertilization schedule to a more frequent application or increasing the dilution strength provides necessary nutrients.

Salt buildup in the soil is another issue that arises from consistent fertilization, especially with synthetic fertilizers or hard water. This accumulation impedes nutrient uptake and harms roots. Regular flushing of the soil with plain water, allowing thorough drainage, mitigates salt buildup. Symptoms of mineral buildup include leaf tip die-back or stunted growth, similar to over-fertilization.
