Many orchids also develop aerial roots, which grow freely in the air, extending outward from the plant’s base. Both the velamen and aerial roots are adaptations to the orchid’s natural habitat as epiphytes on trees or lithophytes on rocks, where roots are exposed to the atmosphere and capture moisture and nutrients from rain and humid air.

Orchid roots perform several essential functions. The velamen, with its spongy structure, efficiently absorbs moisture and dissolved nutrients directly from the air and rainfall. This rapid absorption is particularly effective during intermittent rain events, allowing the orchid to quickly take up water before it evaporates. The velamen can also retain charged ions, aiding in nutrient acquisition.
Beyond absorption, orchid roots provide crucial physical anchoring, allowing the plant to securely attach itself to host trees or other surfaces. This attachment prevents the orchid from being dislodged. The roots also facilitate gas exchange, taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. Some green aerial roots can even perform limited photosynthesis, contributing to the plant’s energy production, especially in leafless orchid species.
Caring for Orchid Roots
Maintaining healthy orchid roots requires specific practices. Well-draining, airy potting mediums like bark, sphagnum moss, or horticultural charcoal are essential. These materials provide the necessary air circulation that orchid roots require to thrive, preventing waterlogging that can suffocate them.
Proper watering is crucial; orchids prefer to dry out slightly between waterings. The velamen’s color change from silvery-white to green indicates hydration. Allowing roots to dry prevents fungal issues.
Adequate air circulation around the roots, both within the pot and for aerial roots, is also necessary to prevent stagnant, overly moist conditions. Repotting every one to three years is necessary as the medium breaks down, compacting and restricting airflow. During repotting, inspect roots and trim unhealthy portions to promote continued health.

Pests like mealybugs can sometimes infest the root system; these can be addressed by cleaning the roots and applying appropriate treatments. Distinguishing new root growth from emerging flower spikes is common. New roots are typically rounded at the tip and may have a silvery or green appearance, while flower spikes often have a more pointed tip, sometimes with a “mitten” shape, and can be flatter or scaly.
