Quantifying Gorilla Strength
Gorillas are considerably stronger than humans, possessing 4 to 10 times the strength of an average person, particularly in their upper body. Their upper body can generate over 1,800 pounds (816 kilograms) of pulling force, compared to a human’s 300 to 400 pounds (136 to 181 kilograms). While exaggerated figures exist, such as silverback gorillas bench pressing 4,000 pounds, scientific observations indicate gorillas can lift around 1,796 pounds (815 kilograms) or up to 27 times their own body weight.
Gorillas also exhibit an impressive bite force of approximately 1,300 pounds per square inch (PSI), nearly double that of a lion and eight times stronger than a human’s. This powerful bite is primarily used for crushing tough vegetation, such as fibrous stems, bark, and nuts, which form a significant part of their diet. Their strength is further demonstrated by their ability to effortlessly uproot small trees and bend thick bamboo stalks.
The Biological Basis of Their Power
A gorilla’s physical prowess stems from specific anatomical and physiological attributes. Gorillas possess 1.5 to 2 times more muscle mass than humans. Their muscles contain a high concentration of fast-twitch fibers, specialized for short, explosive bursts of power, in contrast to the slow-twitch fibers more prevalent in humans that support endurance activities. These fibers are also longer and denser, particularly in their arms and shoulders, contributing to their ability to exert force over a wide range of motion.
Male gorillas also feature a bony ridge on top of their skull, known as a sagittal crest, which serves as a large attachment site for their powerful jaw muscles. Gorillas have evolved a physique adapted to their forest environments. Knuckle-walking, their primary mode of locomotion, along with regular climbing and foraging for food, continually develops and maintains their upper body and limb strength.
Their plant-based diet provides ample nutrients and energy due to the sheer volume they consume daily. Their specialized digestive system, including a large hindgut and specific gut bacteria, efficiently breaks down the cellulose in fibrous plants, allowing them to extract necessary calories and maintain their large muscle mass.
Variations in Gorilla Strength
Individual gorilla strength can vary based on sex, age, and species. Adult male gorillas, known as silverbacks due to the silver hair that develops on their backs, are noticeably larger and more muscular than females. Silverbacks typically weigh between 300 and 485 pounds (136 to 220 kilograms), while females generally range from 150 to 250 pounds (68 to 113 kilograms). Males also have a higher proportion of muscle, particularly in their forelimbs.
Despite the size disparity, female gorillas are still remarkably strong, capable of lifting approximately 990 pounds (450 kilograms). A gorilla’s strength generally peaks in mature adult males around 15 years of age, coinciding with their full development into silverbacks. Gorillas develop strength far earlier than humans, often surpassing human capabilities at a young age.
Female gorillas may maintain or even gain bone strength as they age, a contrast to humans, possibly due to sustained hormone levels throughout their lives. Wild gorillas tend to exhibit greater overall strength compared to those in captivity, attributed to their consistently active lifestyle.
