How Old Do Spiders Get and What Influences Their Lifespan?

Spiders exhibit a remarkable range in their lifespans. While some species may complete their entire existence within a few months, others can live for many years, with some even reaching several decades. This significant variation depends on a combination of biological traits and external conditions.

Factors Influencing Spider Lifespan

Environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity, play a significant role in a spider’s longevity, as their metabolic rates are directly affected by external warmth. Favorable conditions, including consistent food availability and protection from harsh elements, can extend a spider’s life. Spiders living in controlled environments, like captivity, often live longer due to a steady food supply and absence of predators.

Predation also significantly impacts how long spiders survive in the wild, as they are prey for various animals, including birds, lizards, and wasps. Gender is another differentiating factor; female spiders typically live longer than males across many species.

Lifespans of Common Spider Types

Spider lifespans differ considerably across species. Short-lived species often complete their life cycle within approximately one year or less. Many common house spiders, such as the American house spider, typically live for about one to two years. Orb-weaver spiders generally have a lifespan of around 12 months, usually dying after reproduction in late summer or autumn.

Medium-lived spiders can survive for a few years. Wolf spiders, which are active hunters, commonly live for one to two years, though some species can extend this to three years, particularly females. Jumping spiders typically live for about six months to two years in the wild, but some individuals and species, like the regal jumping spider, can reach up to three years in captivity. Other species like black widows and brown recluse spiders generally live for one to three years and one to four years, respectively. Cellar spiders, also known as “daddy long-legs,” can live up to three years indoors.

Among the longest-lived spiders are tarantulas and trapdoor spiders. Female tarantulas are notable for their longevity, often living between 10 and 30 years, with some reported to live for 35 to 40 years in captivity. Male tarantulas have significantly shorter lives, typically ranging from three to six years. Trapdoor spiders, which construct burrows, traditionally live between 5 to 20 years. One remarkable female trapdoor spider, named Number 16, set a record by living an estimated 43 years in an Australian reserve.

Spider Life Cycle and Longevity

All spiders progress through three main life stages: egg, spiderling, and adult. Spiders begin their lives within an egg sac, which can contain anywhere from a few to thousands of eggs, depending on the species. These eggs hatch into spiderlings, which are miniature versions of adult spiders.

Spiderlings undergo a series of molts, shedding their exoskeletons as they grow and develop into adults. Upon reaching the adult stage, spiders become sexually mature and are capable of reproduction. Reproduction often marks a turning point in a spider’s lifespan. Many male spiders die shortly after mating. Female spiders, however, frequently live longer to lay and often guard their eggs, and in some species, they may produce multiple egg sacs over their lifetime.
