Predation from larger fish, seals, and other lobsters can shorten a lobster’s life, particularly when young or immediately after molting when their new shell is soft. Disease outbreaks can also impact lobster populations. Human activities, such as fishing pressure and habitat destruction, influence lobster longevity, as these activities remove individuals and degrade their living environments.

Their ability to regenerate lost limbs and repair cellular damage also contributes to their extended lifespan. A biological mechanism contributing to this sustained health is the presence of an enzyme called telomerase. Telomerase helps maintain telomere length, which are protective caps on the ends of DNA strands. While telomerase activity is typically limited to embryonic stages or specific cells in most vertebrates, lobsters express this enzyme throughout adulthood in most tissues, allowing continuous cellular repair and replication, thus counteracting the typical aging process.

While precise ages are difficult to confirm, some large lobsters caught have been estimated to be over 50 years old. The oldest known lobsters captured include some weighing over nine kilograms, with estimated ages between 120 and 140 years.
