Parasitic worms are a common health concern for pets. Over-the-counter dewormers like Sentry Worm X Plus offer a convenient way to manage these internal parasites. Understanding proper usage is important for canine well-being.
What Sentry Worm X Plus Treats
Sentry Worm X Plus contains pyrantel pamoate and praziquantel, which together treat a range of internal parasites in dogs. It is effective against seven specific worm strains:
- Two types of tapeworms: Dipylidium caninum and Taenia pisiformis.
- Two roundworm species: Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina.
- Three types of hookworms: Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma braziliense, and Uncinaria stenocephala.
Pyrantel pamoate functions as a neuromuscular blocker, paralyzing roundworms and hookworms for expulsion. Praziquantel disrupts the protective outer layer of tapeworms, leading to their breakdown and digestion. The product is formulated in different strengths to accommodate various dog sizes, with specific versions for small dogs (6-25 pounds) and medium to large dogs (over 25 pounds).
Giving Sentry Worm X Plus to Your Pet
The correct dosage depends on the dog’s weight, so administer the appropriate formulation for its size. For puppies and small dogs weighing 6.0 to 12.0 pounds, one chewable tablet of the small dog formula (containing 30 mg of each active ingredient) is recommended. Dogs weighing 12.1 to 25 pounds should receive two chewable tablets of this same small dog formula.
For medium and large dogs, a different strength chewable is used, with each tablet containing 114 mg of both pyrantel pamoate and praziquantel. Dogs weighing 25.1 to 50 pounds require one tablet. Those from 50.1 to 100 pounds need two tablets. Larger dogs between 100.1 and 150 pounds should be given three tablets, and dogs weighing 150.1 to 200 pounds require four tablets.
Sentry Worm X Plus is typically given as a single dose. Offer it directly by hand, conceal it in food, or place it at the back of the dog’s mouth. Observe the dog for a few minutes after administration to ensure the entire dose is consumed. Giving the medication after a meal can help minimize stomach irritation and reduce side effects.
Re-treatment may be necessary based on factors like fecal examination results or if re-infections are likely. While some general guidelines suggest monthly deworming for puppies and quarterly for adults, the product label emphasizes consulting a veterinarian for specific re-treatment advice and deworming schedules, as these can vary depending on the dog’s environment and activity level.
Safety and Veterinary Guidance
Sentry Worm X Plus is formulated for use in puppies 12 weeks of age or older, as well as adult dogs. However, it should not be given to sick dogs or puppies, and a veterinarian should be consulted for a proper diagnosis if an animal is unwell. The safety of this dewormer has not been evaluated for breeding dogs or pregnant females.
While generally well-tolerated, some dogs may experience mild side effects following treatment. These can include vomiting, loose stools, a temporary decrease in activity, drooling, reduced appetite, lethargy, or restlessness.
Contact a veterinarian if any of these signs are observed after administering the medication. Consulting a veterinarian is also advised for assistance in diagnosing, treating, and controlling parasitic infections. They can provide tailored guidance on deworming schedules and prevention strategies, especially in cases of re-infection, such as tapeworms which are often linked to flea infestations.
