Average Weight of a Silverback Gorilla
A full-grown silverback gorilla, a mature male, typically weighs between 300 and 500 pounds (136 to 227 kilograms). Some larger individuals, particularly Eastern Lowland gorillas, can reach weights up to 600 pounds (272 kilograms) or more.
Female gorillas are considerably smaller, generally weighing between 150 and 250 pounds (70 to 115 kilograms). Younger male gorillas, known as “blackbacks,” are also lighter than silverbacks, as they have not yet reached full adult size. Factors Influencing Silverback Weight
A silverback gorilla’s weight can vary due to several biological and environmental factors. Age plays a significant role, as male gorillas typically attain full physical maturity and peak weight around 12 to 14 years. Younger silverbacks, still developing, naturally weigh less than their fully mature counterparts.
Diet quality and availability are also influential. Gorillas are primarily herbivores, consuming large quantities of plant material such as leaves, stems, roots, fruits, and bamboo shoots. Captive gorillas, with consistently available and often calorie-rich diets, may sometimes weigh more than their wild counterparts.
Genetic predispositions contribute to individual size differences, meaning some gorillas are naturally inclined to be larger than others based on inherited traits. The two main gorilla species, Eastern and Western gorillas, and their respective subspecies, also exhibit slight variations in average weights. These muscles contain a high proportion of fast-twitch fibers, which are optimized for generating rapid, powerful bursts of force rather than sustained endurance.
Their robust skeletal structure provides a sturdy framework for this musculature. Gorilla bones are notably thicker and denser than human bones, particularly in their upper bodies, which helps them withstand the stresses of their daily activities. This includes knuckle-walking, a primary mode of locomotion, which contributes to the development of their exceptionally strong arms and shoulders. Their broad chests and strong back muscles enable them to generate considerable force.
Silverbacks possess large hands and a powerful grip, capable of bending iron bars or tearing down small trees. Their jaws are also remarkably strong, equipped with large molars and supported by a conical head shape, allowing them to crush tough plant material with a bite force estimated at around 1,300 pounds per square inch. These combined physical adaptations make silverback gorillas approximately 4 to 10 times stronger than the average human, enabling them to lift over 1,763 pounds (800 kilograms) of dead weight.
