Foxes are captivating members of the dog family, Canidae, recognized for their agility and intelligence. Defining a Fox
While “fox” is commonly used, in a biological context, it primarily refers to animals within the genus Vulpes, often called “true foxes.” These true foxes possess distinct characteristics that set them apart from other canids, such as wolves or domestic dogs. They are typically smaller, weighing between 0.7 to 8.7 kilograms, and feature a flattened skull. A prominent long, bushy tail, often at least half their body length, serves for balance and communication. True foxes also tend to have a narrow muzzle, large pointed ears, and sometimes display black, triangular markings between their eyes and nose.

Globally, there are 12 extant species of “true foxes” belonging to the Vulpes genus. These species exhibit a remarkable range of adaptations to their varied habitats. The Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the most widespread and largest true fox, inhabiting nearly all of the Northern Hemisphere, from North America to Asia and Europe.
