The Sound’s Intensity
Howler monkey calls are among the loudest sounds produced by any terrestrial animal. Their roars can reach extraordinary decibel levels, with some reports indicating sounds up to 140 decibels. For perspective, a rock concert registers around 120 decibels, while a jet engine at takeoff is approximately 150 decibels. This intensity allows their vocalizations to carry over significant distances.
Their howls can travel effectively through the dense jungle, audible from as far as 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) away. The sound’s ability to penetrate thick foliage makes it an efficient communication tool across vast areas. Howler monkeys are particularly loud for their body size, emitting an impressive 11 decibels per kilogram of body mass.
How the Howl is Produced
The howler monkey’s capacity for powerful vocalizations stems from unique anatomical adaptations within their throat. A key feature is their enlarged hyoid bone, a U-shaped bone located in the neck that supports the tongue in many mammals. In howler monkeys, this bone is significantly larger and more cup-shaped than in humans, acting as a specialized resonating chamber. This hollow structure, sometimes containing air sacs, amplifies and deepens the sound produced.
Their vocal cords also contribute to the sound’s potency; despite the monkey’s smaller size, their vocal folds are three times longer than those of a human. As air passes through these specialized vocal cords, the sound enters the enlarged hyoid bone. The bone’s unique structure causes the sound waves to resonate and combine, greatly amplifying the original sound into the characteristic booming howl.
Why Howler Monkeys Howl
Howler monkeys use loud vocalizations for social functions within their groups and territories. A main purpose is territorial defense, warning other groups that an area is occupied and helping to avoid physical confrontations. This auditory display helps maintain spacing between groups, reducing aggressive encounters. The howls also allow groups to communicate their location, especially at dawn and dusk, coordinating movements.
These vocalizations also play a role in mate attraction, particularly for males. A male’s ability to produce loud, prolonged calls signals his health and vigor, making him more appealing to potential mates. This vocal competition among males is a form of precopulatory display. They employ a variety of calls, including barks, grunts, and woofs, for specific messages like warnings or group spacing. Their loud cries can also deter predators, creating an impression of a larger, more formidable group.
Where Howler Monkeys Live
Howler monkeys inhabit the tropical forests of Central and South America, extending their range from southern Mexico down to parts of South America. They are commonly found in both lowland and montane rainforests, as well as tropical dry forests. These primates spend nearly their entire lives in the tree canopy, rarely descending to the ground.
Their arboreal lifestyle means their distinctive calls are particularly suited for communication across dense, forested environments. The ability of their howls to travel long distances through the trees is integral to their survival. This allows them to effectively manage their territories and interact with other groups.
