This technique has been used since the 1950s and is considered a reliable method for age determination in most dolphin species. The pattern of these layers allows for accurate age estimation, especially in younger dolphins. While tooth extraction is sometimes required for detailed analysis, non-invasive methods like dental radiography are also being explored, though their accuracy can vary, particularly in older animals. Other less precise methods, such as assessing overall body length, are generally not used for accurate age determination in older animals due to their growth patterns.
