Eye color can also be a factor, with lighter-colored eyes sometimes experiencing longer dilation.

Age is another contributing element, as children and younger individuals often experience longer-lasting dilation than adults. The body’s individual physiological response to the medication also dictates how quickly the drops wear off, as each person metabolizes the medication at a unique rate.

Navigating Post-Dilation Effects

After pupil dilation, individuals commonly experience temporary side effects. Light sensitivity, also known as photophobia, is common because widened pupils allow more light to enter the eye. Bright sunlight or even indoor lighting can feel uncomfortably intense.

Blurred vision is another frequent effect, particularly for near tasks like reading or using a phone. This occurs because dilating drops temporarily impair the eye’s ability to focus up close. Distant vision is generally less affected, but some individuals might notice a slight haziness.

To manage these effects, wearing sunglasses, even indoors or on cloudy days, is recommended to reduce light discomfort. Planning a ride home from the eye exam is advisable, as driving can be challenging and unsafe due to impaired vision and light sensitivity. It is also practical to schedule activities that do not require sharp near vision.
