Humira (adalimumab) is a commonly prescribed biologic medication used to manage various autoimmune conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis. Its effectiveness relies significantly on proper storage conditions, particularly maintaining its temperature. Understanding these requirements is important for patients to ensure the medication remains potent and safe for use.
Humira’s Temperature Stability
Humira pens and pre-filled syringes can be stored at room temperature, defined as up to 77°F (25°C), for a maximum duration of 14 days. This allowance is primarily for situations like travel when continuous refrigeration might not be feasible.
Once Humira is removed from the refrigerator and reaches room temperature, the 14-day countdown begins, regardless of whether it is subsequently returned to refrigeration. After this 14-day period has passed, or if the medication has been exposed to temperatures exceeding 77°F (25°C), it must be discarded. Adalimumab, the active ingredient, is temperature-sensitive and can degrade when exposed to higher temperatures or left unrefrigerated for too long, reducing its potency.
Identifying Compromised Humira
Before each use, visually inspect your Humira pen or pre-filled syringe for signs of compromise. The solution inside should appear clear and colorless. Any changes in its appearance, such as cloudiness, discoloration, or the presence of flakes or particles, indicate the medication is compromised and should not be used.
In addition to visual cues, the integrity of the packaging is also important. Examine the carton and the device itself for any damage or tampering. If there are any doubts about the medication’s integrity, or if it has exceeded the allowed time out of refrigeration, it must be discarded. Always contact a pharmacist or healthcare provider if you are unsure about the condition of your Humira.
Safe Handling and Storage Practices
Upon receipt, store Humira in its original carton in a refrigerator between 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C). This protects it from light exposure, which affects stability. Never freeze Humira; if it has been frozen, even if thawed, it must be discarded.
When traveling, planning ahead helps maintain appropriate storage conditions. Using an insulated bag with ice packs can help keep Humira within the recommended refrigerated temperature range. For short trips where room temperature storage is permitted, always record the date the medication was removed from the refrigerator to track the 14-day limit.
