Scientists employ various methods to determine a dolphin’s age and understand their lifespans. By counting these distinct layers, known as dentinal growth layer groups (GLGs), researchers can estimate the dolphin’s chronological age. This method is considered accurate, particularly for younger dolphins.

Challenges arise in applying this method to living dolphins, as it typically requires a tooth extraction. However, researchers have developed less invasive techniques, such as analyzing epigenetic markers from small skin or blood samples. These epigenetic “clocks” examine DNA methylation patterns, which correlate with age, offering a promising alternative for age estimation in wild populations. Long-term photo-identification studies, where individual dolphins are tracked from birth, also provide valuable life history data.
