How Big Can Earwigs Get? The Largest Species

Earwigs are common insects often found in gardens and homes, and their distinctive appearance frequently sparks curiosity about their dimensions. Understanding their size involves looking at typical earwigs encountered daily, as well as exploring truly exceptional species.

Common Earwig Sizes

Most earwigs commonly seen in gardens or around homes are relatively small, typically ranging from 10 to 15 millimeters (approximately 0.4 to 0.6 inches) in length. These common species, such as the European earwig (Forficula auricularia), possess a flattened body shape, which allows them to easily hide in narrow crevices. Their most recognizable feature is the pair of prominent pincer-like appendages, known as cerci, located at the rear of their abdomen.

Their cerci vary in shape between sexes, with males often having more curved and robust pincers compared to the straighter ones found on females. Despite their somewhat intimidating appearance, these common earwigs are generally harmless to humans. They primarily forage for food in diverse environments like damp soil and decaying wood.

The Largest Earwig Species

While most earwigs are small, the largest known species reached remarkable dimensions. The Saint Helena giant earwig (Labidura herculeana) was once the largest earwig in the world. Individuals of this species could grow up to 80 millimeters (approximately 3.1 inches) in length, excluding their cerci. Including their powerful cerci, some specimens reportedly measured over 100 millimeters (4 inches) from head to tail.

This earwig was endemic to Saint Helena, a remote island in the South Atlantic, where it inhabited deep burrows. The Saint Helena giant earwig is now considered extinct, with the last confirmed sighting in 1967. No currently living earwig species reaches its colossal size, though some tropical species can grow larger than their temperate counterparts.

What Influences Earwig Size

An earwig’s final size is influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Each species has a genetically determined potential size range. Within a species, individual growth is affected by the availability and quality of food sources throughout development. Abundant nutrition generally supports more robust growth.

Environmental conditions also play a significant role. Temperature and humidity during the earwig’s nymphal stages impact how quickly they grow. Warmer, more humid conditions can facilitate faster development and larger adult sizes. The number of molts an earwig undergoes before reaching adulthood also contributes to its ultimate dimensions.
