Understanding Cyclamen Nutritional Needs

Cyclamen require a balanced supply of essential nutrients for growth, strong roots, and prolific flowers. These include macronutrients like nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), as well as various micronutrients. Nitrogen supports lush leaf development, while phosphorus aids in root growth and vibrant blooms. Potassium contributes to overall plant health and resilience.

A balanced NPK ratio (e.g., 10-10-10 or 20-20-20) is often suitable during active growth. Some growers find that a fertilizer with a slightly higher phosphorus content (e.g., 15-30-15) can further encourage blooming. Micronutrients like iron, magnesium, and calcium are also important for chlorophyll production, photosynthesis, and cell structure. Liquid fertilizers are generally preferred for container-grown cyclamen because they are quickly absorbed and allow for precise control over nutrient delivery.

When and How to Fertilize Cyclamen

Fertilizing During Cyclamen Dormancy

Cyclamen typically enter a dormant period during the warmer summer months, usually from late spring to early fall. During this phase, the plant’s growth slows significantly, and its leaves may yellow and die back. Reduce or stop fertilization entirely during dormancy.

The plant does not require nutrients while it is resting and not actively growing. Continuing to fertilize a dormant cyclamen can lead to root damage or encourage weak, leggy growth when the plant should be conserving energy. Once new leaves begin to emerge in the fall, signaling the end of dormancy, regular fertilization can gradually resume.

Common Fertilization Issues

Improper fertilization can lead to several common problems in cyclamen, manifesting as either over-fertilization or under-fertilization. Signs of over-fertilization include yellowing and wilting of lower leaves, browning of leaf tips and margins, stunted growth, and a white, crusty residue on the soil surface. Too much fertilizer can cause a buildup of salts in the soil, which can draw moisture away from the roots, leading to a phenomenon known as “fertilizer burn.” If over-fertilization occurs, flush the soil with plenty of clean water to leach out excess salts, and remove any affected leaves. For potted plants, repotting into fresh soil may be necessary in severe cases.

Conversely, under-fertilization can result in pale or yellowing leaves, particularly older ones, indicating a nitrogen deficiency. A lack of blooms or weak, stunted growth can point to insufficient phosphorus or a general nutrient deficiency. If these signs are observed, ensure the plant is receiving a consistent feeding schedule with an appropriate, diluted fertilizer during its active growing season. Regular monitoring of the plant’s appearance helps in identifying and addressing these issues promptly.
