Phosphorus plays a significant role in root development, flowering, and fruit set, promoting a strong foundational system and reproductive success. Potassium improves overall plant vigor, fruit quality, disease resistance, and water regulation. These three elements form the backbone of a guava tree’s dietary needs.

Beyond primary macronutrients, guava trees also depend on several micronutrients in smaller amounts. Magnesium is central to chlorophyll production, essential for photosynthesis. Iron is involved in chlorophyll formation and enzymatic functions. Choosing the Right Guava Fertilizer

Selecting an appropriate fertilizer involves considering the NPK ratio and fertilizer type. For young guava trees, a balanced NPK ratio like 8-8-8 or 10-10-10 encourages balanced root and shoot development. As trees mature and begin to fruit, a fertilizer with higher potassium, such as 6-2-12 or 8-3-9, supports fruit quality and yield.

When and How to Fertilize Guava Trees

Timing and method of fertilizer application are important for effective nutrient uptake. Young guava trees, under two years old, benefit from more frequent, lighter applications, every 1 to 2 months during their active growing season. Mature, fruit-bearing trees require fertilization three to four times a year, often coinciding with key growth phases.

Fertilize mature trees in late winter or early spring before new growth, again after the first fruit set, and potentially once more in late summer or early fall. To avoid over-fertilization, which can lead to root damage or excessive vegetative growth at the expense of fruit, follow manufacturer’s recommended rates and observe the tree’s response.

Recognizing and Addressing Guava Nutrient Issues

Observing a guava tree’s foliage provides clues about its nutritional status. Yellowing leaves, particularly older ones, indicate nitrogen deficiency. If yellowing appears between the veins of younger leaves while veins remain green, it suggests iron or zinc deficiency. A reddish-purple tinge on leaves, especially older ones, can be a sign of phosphorus deficiency.

Browning or scorching along leaf edges, particularly on older leaves, points to potassium deficiency. Magnesium deficiency manifests as interveinal yellowing on older leaves, with veins staying green, similar to iron. These visual cues indicate an imbalance.

When nutrient issues are suspected, a soil test provides precise information about nutrient levels and pH, guiding corrective actions. Adjusting fertilizer type or amount based on test results is a common solution. If a specific micronutrient is low, a foliar spray containing that element provides a quick remedy. If over-fertilization has occurred, characterized by scorched leaf tips or wilting, flushing the soil with ample water helps leach excess salts away from the root zone.
