The Guapuruvu tree, scientifically known as Enterolobium contortisiliquum, is a striking and fast-growing species native to the diverse landscapes of South America. This impressive tree is recognized for its considerable size and distinctive appearance. Its common name, Guapuruvu, highlights its unique characteristics and origin.

Physical Characteristics

Following flowering, the Guapuruvu develops unique, ear-shaped or spiraled seed pods, which are responsible for its common name “earpod tree.” These pods are dark and leathery, containing hard, smooth, red-brown seeds.

The Guapuruvu tree is indigenous to a broad region of South America, including Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia. It thrives primarily in tropical and subtropical climates, often found in humid forests. This tree is also present in areas transitional to savannah-like environments, indicating its adaptability.

Guapuruvu prefers fertile, well-drained soils, and is frequently encountered near rivers or in recently cleared areas. It grows at elevations ranging from sea level up to approximately 2,200 meters, thriving in areas with annual daytime temperatures between 20 to 26°C and mean annual rainfall of 1,200 to 1,600mm.

Scarification methods, such as mechanical abrasion or immersion in hot water, are commonly employed to break dormancy and facilitate water absorption. Soaking seeds in hot water, allowing them to cool and soak for 12 to 24 hours, is an effective technique to improve germination rates.

Selecting an appropriate planting site is important given the Guapuruvu’s potential for large size and wide crown, necessitating ample space for growth. The tree prefers well-drained, fertile soil, although it can tolerate various soil types. Initial care involves consistent watering, particularly during establishment and dry periods, as established trees are drought tolerant.
