An ultrasound of the breast may also be performed, which uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the breast tissue. This procedure is useful for determining if a suspicious area is a solid mass or a fluid-filled cyst, as cysts are typically benign. A breast MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) might be recommended, which uses magnets and radio waves to produce highly detailed images. If these additional imaging tests still suggest a potential malignancy, a biopsy may be recommended. A biopsy involves removing a small tissue sample from the suspicious area for examination under a microscope to definitively determine if cancer cells are present.
