Prostaglandins are natural substances that mediate pain, inflammation, and fever. By decreasing these prostaglandins, ibuprofen helps alleviate common ear infection symptoms, including earache, throbbing, swelling, and general discomfort.

Causes and Types of Ear Infections

An ear infection, also referred to as otitis, involves inflammation and often fluid accumulation within the ear. These infections are typically caused by bacterial or viral pathogens. The infection may also spread to nearby tissues, causing mastoiditis (infection of the bone behind the ear) or, in very rare cases, meningitis (infection of the brain’s membranes). Seek immediate medical attention for severe or worsening pain, a high fever (102.2°F/39°C or higher), or fluid, pus, or blood draining from the ear. Changes in hearing, dizziness, or vomiting also warrant a healthcare provider visit. If symptoms do not improve after two to three days, or if the affected individual is an infant under six months of age, medical consultation is necessary for diagnosis and treatment, which may include antibiotics.
