Dolphins do not lay eggs; they give birth to live young. These marine animals are mammals, sharing many reproductive and physiological characteristics with land mammals, a fact that differentiates them significantly from egg-laying marine creatures.

Dolphin Reproduction: Live Birth

Dolphins are viviparous, developing their offspring internally and giving birth to live young. The gestation period for dolphins varies by species, typically lasting between 10 to 12 months, though larger species like orcas can have pregnancies extending up to 17 months. During birth, which occurs underwater, the calf is usually born tail-first. This tail-first presentation is an important adaptation, minimizing the risk of drowning by ensuring the calf’s blowhole is the last part to emerge, allowing it to take its first breath immediately.

The umbilical cord naturally breaks during delivery. Immediately after birth, the mother guides the newborn calf to the surface for its initial breath, an action that can be assisted by another dolphin in the pod. Dolphin calves are highly dependent on their mothers, nursing for an extended period, often up to two years, though some may nurse longer. The mother produces rich, fatty milk that the calf suckles from mammary slits, providing nutrients for rapid growth and blubber development, which is important for insulation in the marine environment.

The Mammalian Nature of Dolphins

Dolphins are mammals. Like all mammals, they are warm-blooded, maintaining a stable internal body temperature regardless of their environment. They breathe air using lungs, surfacing regularly to exhale and inhale through a blowhole located on top of their heads. This contrasts with fish, which use gills to extract oxygen from water.

Another characteristic of mammals is the presence of hair at some point in their lives. While adult dolphins appear smooth, newborn calves have a few whiskers on their rostrum (snout) that fall out shortly after birth. Female dolphins possess mammary glands and produce milk to nourish their young, a key mammalian trait.

Distinguishing Dolphins from Egg-Laying Marine Life

The misconception that dolphins might lay eggs often stems from their aquatic habitat, leading to confusion with other marine animals. Dolphins belong to a different biological class than egg-laying marine creatures. Fish, for instance, reproduce by laying eggs that are fertilized externally, releasing large numbers of eggs into the water. These eggs lack a shell and would dry out if not in water.

Marine reptiles like sea turtles also lay eggs, but they deposit them on land, burying them in sandy nests. These eggs have a protective shell, unlike the jelly-like eggs of most fish. The reproductive methods of fish and sea turtles differ from the internal development and live birth observed in dolphins.
