Iguanas do not possess external ear structures like humans, but they are not deaf. These reptiles have a well-developed auditory system, allowing them to perceive sounds and navigate their world. Their hearing enables them to detect various auditory cues vital for survival.
Iguana Hearing: The Visible Truth
Iguanas lack external ear flaps. Instead, their visible eardrum, known as the tympanum, is located on each side of the head, just behind the eye and above the jowls. This thin, circular membrane is typically flush with the skin surface, appearing as a slightly recessed, often translucent or yellowish patch. It can sometimes be covered by scales. This design allows them to detect airborne sounds.
How Iguanas Process Sound
Sound Reception and Transmission
The tympanum serves as the initial point of sound reception for an iguana. When sound waves travel through the air and reach the iguana’s head, they cause the tympanic membrane to vibrate. These vibrations are then transmitted inward to the middle ear cavity. Within this cavity, a single bone called the stapes, or columella, connects the vibrating tympanum to the inner ear. The stapes transfers these mechanical vibrations into the fluid-filled inner ear.
Signal Processing and Sensitivity
The inner ear houses the cochlear duct, where sensory cells convert the mechanical vibrations into electrical signals. These signals are then sent along the auditory nerve (the eighth cranial nerve) to the brain for interpretation. Iguanas primarily hear sounds in a lower frequency range than humans, with optimal sensitivity between 500 and 3,000 hertz, compared to the human range of 2,000 to 5,000 hertz. Their hearing sensitivity can also be influenced by their body temperature, performing best when they are at their ideal temperature.

Predator Detection
Hearing plays an important role in an iguana’s daily life and survival in its natural habitat. Their auditory sense aids in detecting potential predators, allowing them to take evasive action. For example, iguanas can respond to the sounds of approaching birds of prey or other threats, even recognizing hawk calls. This auditory information can complement their strong visual perception, providing a wider range of sensory input for predator detection.
Communication and Environmental Awareness
While iguanas are not highly vocal, primarily using head bobs and body language for communication, their hearing allows them to perceive sounds from other iguanas, which may include subtle cues. They can also discern familiar voices and respond to various environmental noises. Their ability to detect low-frequency vibrations and noises also helps them navigate their surroundings and react to changes in their environment, contributing to their overall awareness and safety.
